Reigning NCAA Division 1 cross country champion Whittni Orton-Morgan, who helped Brigham Young place second Nov. 20 at the championship meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss concluding her collegiate career with an individual title, along with running 15:09.47 in the indoor 5,000 meters Dec. 4 in her first post-collegiate race at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University to elevate to the No. 13 competitor in American indoor history. Orton-Morgan reflects on the conversations she had with BYU women's coach Diljeet Taylor earlier in her career about the potential to become an NCAA champion and how grateful she was to have those aspirations come to fruition during her final season. She expresses gratitude for only racing a limited schedule in the fall, in addition to the opportunity to compete Sept. 17 at the Florida State Open at Apalachee Regional Park, in order to become familar with the 6-kilometer course ahead of the NCAA final. Orton-Morgan examines BYU placing in the top two in the last three cross country championship meets of her career, including a team title March 15 in Stillwater, Okla. She revisits the contrast in the confidence she possessed in her fitness in the final two kilometers of the championship race at Oklahoma State versus the final in Tallahassee, and how strong she felt during her final surge to the finish at Apalachee Regional Park. Orton-Morgan analyzes how significant it was for BYU to sweep both individual titles, with Conner Mantz repeating as champion in the men's 10-kilometer race, and how proud she was to become the first program since Indiana in 1988 to achieve the feat. She also shares how meaningful it was to have her husband Mason and family members attending the NCAA final, along with being able to race with close friend Anna Camp-Bennett, who finished 12th overall to earn All-America honors. Orton-Morgan revisits the transition to racing in Boston and trying to help pace Courtney Wayment to the collegiate indoor record, along with competing against three-time Division 3 champion Annie Rodenfels of Centre College in Kentucky, who prevailed in 15:08.80. She speaks about continuing to train with coach Taylor and being able to travel with the BYU program, in addition to taking a trip to Flagstaff, Ariz. Orton-Morgan looks ahead to her post-collegiate opportunities in 2022 and being able to challenge herself against elite professionals, much like she did in June at the U.S, Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Oregon.
